How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost in 2026? (Prices, What’s Included & What to Watch Out For)

If you’re wondering how much does a boiler service cost, it’s understandable to want a clear idea before booking. With household expenses already adding up, another annual cost might not be something you particularly look forward to. However, regular servicing can play an important role in keeping your boiler safe, reliable and working efficiently.

At Nu Age, our Gas Safe registered engineers provide professional boiler servicing across Coventry, Leamington Spa, Solihull and the surrounding areas. Having your boiler serviced regularly can help identify developing problems and may also be required to keep your boiler warranty valid.

In this guide, we’ll look at the average boiler service cost in 2026 and the factors that can affect the price. We’ll also explain what’s included in an annual boiler service, what could cost extra and whether a one-off service or boiler cover plan could offer better value.

How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost in 2026?

A typical one-off gas boiler service costs around £70 to £120 in the UK. The average boiler service cost varies between providers, so the exact amount you pay will depend on your boiler and where you live. Prices may also be higher in areas where labour costs are greater.

It’s important to remember that the boiler service cost usually covers the inspection and servicing itself. If your heating engineer discovers a fault that requires replacement parts or boiler repairs, these will normally be charged separately. Before booking, check exactly what’s included in the quoted service cost so you know what you’re paying for.

What Affects the Boiler Service Cost?

Although the typical boiler service cost gives you a useful starting point, prices vary depending on the boiler and the work involved. Some of the main factors include:

  • Boiler type: A gas boiler, oil boiler and electric boiler have different servicing requirements.
  • Age and condition: Older boilers or appliances that haven’t been serviced regularly may require additional attention.
  • Location: Labour costs and call-out fees can vary across the UK.
  • Accessibility: A boiler installed in a difficult-to-reach location may take longer to inspect.
  • Engineer: Service costs can vary between individual engineers and larger providers.
  • Additional work: Any faults, replacement parts or repairs identified during the annual service may result in additional costs.

For the most accurate price, it’s worth getting a quote for your specific type of boiler rather than relying solely on a national average. Make sure you’re comparing the same level of service when looking at prices from different providers.

How Much Does an Oil Boiler Service Cost?

An oil boiler service can cost more than a standard gas boiler service because the servicing requirements are different. The exact oil boiler service cost will vary depending on your location, boiler type and condition, as well as the work required during the appointment.

An oil heating system may also require checks of the fuel supply, oil tank and associated pipework. For this reason, it’s best to get a price from a qualified heating engineer based on your particular system rather than assuming the typical gas boiler service cost will apply.

What About Electric Boilers?

Electric boilers don’t burn fuel, so they don’t require the same combustion and flue checks as a gas or oil boiler. However, regular maintenance can still help make sure the heating system is operating correctly. The service cost will vary depending on the type of boiler and provider, so check what’s included when requesting a quote.

What Does an Annual Boiler Service Include?

An annual boiler service involves a series of checks to make sure your boiler is operating safely and working as it should. The exact process can vary depending on the boiler type and manufacturer, but your heating engineer will typically:

  • Carry out a visual inspection of the boiler.
  • Check the boiler controls and operation.
  • Look for leaks, corrosion or signs of wear.
  • Inspect the flue where applicable.
  • Check relevant safety devices.
  • Inspect key internal components, such as the heat exchanger.
  • Check operating pressure and performance.
  • Clean components where necessary.

Your engineer should also highlight any problems that need further attention. For a more detailed breakdown, read our guide to what a boiler service includes.

What’s Not Included in a Standard Boiler Service?

A standard boiler service is primarily an inspection and maintenance appointment. If the engineer discovers a fault, the service cost won’t usually include replacement parts or any significant boiler repairs required to fix it.

Emergency call-outs, radiator or pipework repairs and major system cleaning may also cost extra. Before agreeing to additional work, ask your boiler engineer to explain the problem and any additional costs involved.

How Long Does a Boiler Service Take?

A typical boiler service takes around 40 minutes to an hour. However, how long a boiler service takes can vary depending on the type of boiler, its age and condition, and whether the engineer identifies any problems during the appointment.

Older boilers or appliances showing signs of poor performance may require additional attention. If further repairs are needed, these may take place separately from the annual service and could involve additional labour costs.

How Often Should I Get My Boiler Serviced?

You should generally arrange an annual boiler service, meaning your boiler is checked roughly once every 12 months. Regular boiler servicing helps make sure the appliance is operating safely and gives your heating engineer an opportunity to identify developing problems.

Having your boiler serviced annually may also be required to keep your boiler warranty valid. Check your manufacturer’s terms, as servicing requirements can vary. You can find out more in our guide to how often a boiler should be serviced.

One-Off Boiler Service vs Boiler Cover

You can either pay for a one-off service when your annual service is due or choose a boiler cover plan. Which option is more cost effective depends on your boiler, budget and the level of protection you want.

One-Off Service

With a one-off service, you make a single payment for the boiler service without committing to an ongoing contract. This can be cheaper if your boiler is reliable and rarely needs repairs, but you’ll normally need to pay separately for breakdowns, replacement parts and additional labour.

Boiler Cover

Boiler cover usually involves a monthly or annual payment and may include an annual boiler service alongside repairs or call-outs. However, every cover plan is different, so check the excess, exclusions and repair limits before signing up. It’s also worth checking your home insurance in case you already have some boiler cover.

What Should I Watch Out for When Booking a Boiler Service?

Price is important, but the cheapest boiler service isn’t necessarily the best value. Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what the quoted service cost covers.

Things to check include:

  • Engineer credentials: Gas boiler work should be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Call-out fees: Ask whether these are included in the advertised price.
  • Boiler repairs: Don’t assume repairs or replacement parts are included in a standard service.
  • Boiler cover exclusions: Check excesses, limits and whether prices increase after an introductory period.
  • What’s included: Make sure you’re getting a proper boiler service rather than choosing on price alone.
  • Service records: Keep evidence of your annual service, particularly if it’s required under your boiler warranty.

A reliable service should leave you clear about your boiler’s condition and any further work that’s recommended, including the additional costs involved.

Who Should Service My Boiler?

Choosing the right heating engineer depends on the type of boiler you have. Whoever you use should have the appropriate qualifications and experience to carry out the required checks safely and correctly.

Gas Boilers

A gas boiler service should be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check an engineer’s credentials on the Gas Safe Register before allowing them to work on your gas appliances. Using a qualified engineer also helps ensure your boiler is serviced in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.

Oil Boilers

If you have an oil boiler, look for a heating engineer who is appropriately qualified to work on oil-fired appliances. Using an OFTEC registered technician is a good way to check they’ve completed relevant training for the work required. OFTEC recommends having oil heating appliances serviced at least once a year.

Do Landlords Need an Annual Boiler Service?

Landlords have a legal responsibility to make sure relevant gas appliances and flues in rental properties receive an annual gas safety check from a Gas Safe registered engineer. They must also provide tenants with a copy of the gas safety record within the required timeframe.

However, a gas safety check and a full boiler service aren’t exactly the same thing. Landlords must keep the gas equipment they provide safely maintained, while servicing should also follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Arranging regular servicing alongside the required safety checks can help keep the boiler operating safely and identify maintenance issues.

Is an Annual Boiler Service Worth the Cost?

For most homeowners, an annual boiler service is a worthwhile part of regular maintenance. It gives a qualified engineer the opportunity to carry out important safety checks, assess how the boiler is performing and identify developing faults before they potentially become more serious.

Regular servicing can also help keep your boiler running efficiently and may be required to maintain your boiler warranty. While a yearly service can’t guarantee you’ll avoid future boiler repairs or lower your energy bills, it can give you greater peace of mind that your heating and hot water are operating safely.
