What Does a Boiler Service Include? A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re wondering what does a boiler service include, the answer is a series of checks designed to make sure your boiler is safe, efficient and working properly. During a typical boiler service, a qualified engineer will inspect key components, carry out gas safety checks and test the overall performance of your heating system. Having your boiler serviced annually can also help identify potential issues before they become more serious.

In this guide, we’ll explain what a boiler service includes, what happens during each stage of the appointment and why regular servicing is so important. We’ll also cover how long a boiler service takes, typical boiler service costs and who should carry out the work.

At Nu Age, our Gas Safe registered engineers provide professional boiler servicing across Coventry, Leamington Spa, Solihull and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners keep their gas boilers running safely and efficiently.

What Does a Boiler Service Include?

Every boiler service follows a structured process to make sure your boiler is operating safely and efficiently. While the exact checks can vary depending on the boiler type and the manufacturer’s recommendations, a gas boiler service will usually include a visual inspection, performance testing, gas safety checks and an assessment of the boiler’s internal components. If you have an oil boiler, the service will follow a similar process, although some checks will differ.

Below, we’ll take you through each stage of a typical boiler service, explaining what your boiler engineer is checking and why it’s important for the safety and performance of your heating system.

Step 1: A Visual Inspection

Every boiler service begins with a visual inspection. Before removing the boiler casing, the boiler engineer will examine the appliance and the surrounding area for any obvious signs of damage, corrosion or leaks. They’ll also check that the boiler has been installed correctly and that there’s adequate ventilation where required.

During this stage, the engineer may inspect:

  • The boiler casing for signs of damage or wear.
  • Gas pipework and visible connections.
  • Flue terminals to make sure they’re secure and unobstructed.
  • Visible signs of water leaks or corrosion.
  • The general condition of the boiler and surrounding pipework.

Although these checks are straightforward, they’re an important safety measure. Identifying potential issues early can help prevent more serious faults and ensure your boiler is safe to inspect further.

Step 2: Removing the Boiler Casing

Once the visual inspection has been completed, the boiler engineer will remove the boiler casing where it’s safe and appropriate to do so. This provides access to the internal components and allows a more detailed inspection of the boiler.

Removing the casing isn’t simply about looking inside. It allows the engineer to identify signs of wear, dirt or damage that may not be visible from the outside. All work is carried out in line with the manufacturer’s guidance to ensure the boiler continues operating correctly.

Step 3: Inspecting the Internal Components

With the boiler casing removed, the engineer will inspect the internal components to make sure everything is working properly. The exact checks will depend on the boiler type, but they’ll usually focus on parts that affect the safety, reliability and efficiency of the appliance.

During this stage, the engineer may inspect:

  • The burner for signs of wear or damage.
  • The heat exchanger for corrosion or blockages.
  • The main injector to ensure it’s clean and operating correctly.
  • Safety devices to confirm they’re functioning as intended.
  • Internal components for dirt, debris or signs of deterioration.

If necessary, the engineer may clean accessible components to help maintain efficient performance. They’ll also check for any issues that could increase the risk of a boiler breakdown or lead to more expensive boiler repairs if left unresolved.

Step 4: Gas Pressure and Performance Checks

The next stage of a boiler service is to check that your boiler is performing as it should. One of the most important checks is ensuring the gas pressure is within the manufacturer’s recommended range, as incorrect settings can affect both efficiency and safety.

During this stage, the boiler engineer may:

  • Carry out a gas pressure check.
  • Confirm the burner pressure is correct.
  • Check fan pressures where applicable.
  • Test the hot water and heating system.
  • Make sure the boiler is operating correctly.

These checks help ensure your boiler is working efficiently and can also identify issues such as low boiler pressure or inefficient performance before they develop into larger problems.

Step 5: Flue and Combustion Testing

Your boiler engineer will also inspect the flue to make sure harmful gases are being removed safely from your home. They’ll check the flue and flue terminals for signs of damage, poor installation or blockages that could affect safe operation.

A flue gas analyser is then used to test the combustion process. This specialist equipment measures the gases produced by the boiler and confirms it’s burning fuel safely and efficiently. These checks help identify potential problems, including a carbon monoxide leak or gas leak, while reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. As part of the gas safety check, the engineer will confirm your boiler continues to operate safely and in line with the manufacturer’s requirements.

Step 6: Cleaning and Final Checks

The final stage of a boiler service involves cleaning accessible components where required and carrying out a series of final checks. Not every boiler will need the same level of cleaning, but removing dirt or debris from key parts can help maintain performance and reduce unnecessary wear.

Depending on your boiler type, the engineer may:

  • Clean the condensate trap.
  • Check and clean the magnetic filter where fitted.
  • Inspect all the components for signs of damage or deterioration.
  • Test each safety device.
  • Carry out final operational checks.

Before the appointment ends, the engineer will make sure your boiler is working properly and producing reliable heating and hot water. They’ll also explain any faults they’ve found and recommend any further work if it’s required.

What Doesn’t a Boiler Service Include?

Although a boiler service is designed to check that your boiler is safe and operating efficiently, it doesn’t include every type of heating work. If the engineer identifies a fault during the appointment, further repairs may be needed before the boiler can be returned to full working order.

A standard boiler service doesn’t usually include:

  • Boiler repairs or replacement parts.
  • Emergency breakdown call-outs.
  • Power flushing your central heating system.
  • Repairs to radiators or pipework.
  • Installing a new boiler.

If additional work is needed, your boiler engineer will normally explain the issue, provide a service report and discuss the next steps before carrying out any repairs.

Why Is an Annual Boiler Service Important?

Having your boiler serviced annually does more than keep it running smoothly. Regular servicing helps keep your boiler safe, improves efficiency and can reduce the risk of unexpected problems throughout the year.

Helps Keep Your Boiler Safe

A boiler service includes important gas safety checks that help identify issues before they become serious. Regular servicing can reduce the risk of gas leaks and carbon monoxide while giving you greater peace of mind.

Maintains Efficiency

A well-maintained boiler is more likely to run efficiently, using less energy to heat your home and hot water. This can help lower your energy bills and keep your heating system performing at its best.

Protects Your Boiler Warranty

Many boiler warranties require an annual boiler service carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Missing a service could affect your boiler warranty, so it’s worth checking the manufacturer’s requirements.

Helps Prevent Costly Repairs

Small faults are often easier and cheaper to fix than major breakdowns. Having your boiler serviced regularly can identify signs of wear early, helping to reduce the likelihood of expensive boiler repairs or a boiler breakdown later on.

How Long Does a Boiler Service Take?

The length of a boiler service depends on the boiler type, its condition and whether the engineer identifies any issues during the visit. However, for most homes, a typical boiler service takes about an hour.

Older gas boilers or more complex systems may take slightly longer, particularly if additional checks or cleaning are required. If faults are discovered during the service, any repairs will usually be discussed separately and may require a follow-up appointment.

How Much Does a Boiler Service Cost?

The boiler service cost can vary depending on your location, the boiler type and the company carrying out the work. As a general guide, a one-off boiler service usually costs between £60 and £120, although prices may vary.

If you have an oil boiler, an oil boiler service may cost slightly more because of the additional checks involved. Some homeowners also choose boiler cover or a care plan, which spreads the cost of an annual gas boiler service across monthly payments and may include additional benefits, such as priority call-outs or discounts on boiler repairs.

Who Should Carry Out a Boiler Service?

Choosing the right engineer is just as important as booking a boiler service in the first place. To ensure your boiler is serviced safely and correctly, the work should always be carried out by a qualified professional with the appropriate certifications.

For gas boilers, this means using a Gas Safe registered engineer. They should be happy to show you their Gas Safe ID card, giving you confidence they’re qualified to work on your boiler safely and legally. If you have an oil boiler, it should be serviced by an appropriately qualified heating engineer with experience working on that type of system.
