12 Signs Your Boiler Needs Servicing (Don’t Ignore These)

Recognising the signs your boiler needs servicing can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs and higher energy bills. While some issues may simply mean it’s time for a routine boiler service, others could indicate a fault that requires professional attention. Knowing what to look out for can help keep your heating system running safely and efficiently throughout the year.

In this guide, we’ll explain the most common signs your boiler needs servicing, what they could mean and when it’s time to contact a heating engineer. We’ll also explain when a boiler service may be enough, when boiler repairs could be needed and when it may be worth considering a new boiler.

At Nu Age, our Gas Safe registered engineers help homeowners across Coventry, Leamington Spa, Solihull and the surrounding areas keep their boilers running safely, efficiently and reliably.

1. Your Boiler Is Making Strange Noises

It’s normal for a boiler to make some noise while it’s operating, but loud or unusual noises shouldn’t be ignored. Banging, gurgling, whistling or knocking sounds can all indicate that something isn’t working as it should.

These strange noises may be caused by:

  • Trapped air within the heating system.
  • Limescale build up on the heat exchanger.
  • Low water pressure.
  • Worn or faulty internal components.

In many cases, these issues can be identified during a boiler service before they develop into more expensive problems. If the noise continues or becomes worse, your boiler may also need a repair to restore safe and efficient operation.

2. Your Energy Bills Keep Increasing

If your energy bills have increased without a noticeable change in how you use your heating or hot water, your boiler could be losing efficiency. As components wear over time, an inefficient boiler often has to work harder to produce the same level of performance, using more energy in the process.

Regular servicing helps keep your boiler operating efficiently by identifying issues before they affect performance. However, if you have one of the older boilers and efficiency continues to decline despite regular maintenance, it may be worth discussing whether a new boiler would provide better long-term value.

3. Your Hot Water Is Inconsistent

If your hot water takes longer to heat up, doesn’t stay hot or regularly changes temperature, it could be a sign your boiler needs servicing. While occasional fluctuations can happen, ongoing problems often point to an underlying issue that shouldn’t be ignored.

Possible causes include:

  • Limescale build up.
  • A worn heat exchanger.
  • Faulty internal components.
  • A problem with the heating system.

A boiler service can help identify the cause and determine whether the issue can be resolved through maintenance or if boiler repairs are needed.

4. Your Home Takes Longer to Heat Up

If your home isn’t warming up as quickly as it used to, or some rooms stay colder than others, your boiler may no longer be performing efficiently. A loss of heating performance can happen gradually, making it easy to overlook until it becomes more noticeable.

This could be caused by poor circulation, trapped air within the system or components that aren’t operating as they should. A boiler service can identify the cause and help restore your heating system’s performance. If your boiler is older and regularly develops issues, it may also be worth considering whether it’s time for a new boiler.

5. Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping

Boiler pressure naturally changes slightly during normal use, but frequent pressure drops are a clear sign that something isn’t right. If you’re regularly topping up the pressure or notice the gauge falling below the recommended level, your boiler should be inspected.

Possible causes include:

  • A water leak somewhere within the system.
  • A faulty pressure relief valve.
  • An issue with the expansion vessel.
  • Low water pressure.

A boiler service can help identify the cause before it leads to more serious problems. If a fault is found, your heating engineer may recommend a boiler repair to restore the system to full working order.

6. You Notice a Leaking Boiler

A leaking boiler should never be ignored, even if the leak appears to be small. Water escaping from your boiler can damage internal components and may lead to more expensive repairs if left untreated.

Leaks can develop for several reasons, including worn seals, loose connections or corrosion inside the boiler. In some cases, the issue may be straightforward to repair, while older boilers with multiple faults may be better replaced with a new boiler. If you notice water around your boiler, arrange a professional inspection as soon as possible to prevent the problem from getting worse.

7. The Pilot Light Changes Colour or Keeps Going Out

If you have a conventional boiler with a pilot light, it should normally burn with a steady blue flame. A yellow or orange flame, or a pilot light that repeatedly goes out, can indicate that your boiler isn’t burning gas correctly.

This could be caused by:

  • A faulty thermocouple.
  • Dirt affecting the burner.
  • Poor combustion.
  • An underlying gas safety issue.

These warning signs shouldn’t be ignored, as they could increase the risk of carbon monoxide. If the pilot light changes colour or won’t stay lit, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect your boiler as soon as possible.

8. There Are Strange Smells Around Your Boiler

Your boiler shouldn’t produce unusual smells during normal operation. If you notice a burning smell, an unusual odour or suspect a gas leak, switch the boiler off if it’s safe to do so and seek professional advice immediately.

It’s important to remember that carbon monoxide has no smell, so you can’t rely on your senses alone to detect it. For this reason, it’s recommended to have a working carbon monoxide alarm installed near your boiler. Any unusual smell should be investigated promptly by a Gas Safe engineer to identify the cause and make sure your boiler is running safely.

9. There Are Soot Marks or Signs of Corrosion

Visible soot marks, rust or corrosion around your boiler are warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored. These could indicate poor combustion, a leaking component or general wear that affects the safety and efficiency of your system.

Even if your boiler still appears to be working normally, it’s worth arranging an inspection to identify the cause. A boiler service can help determine whether the issue is minor or if further repairs are needed to keep your boiler running safely.

10. Your Boiler Keeps Switching Off

If your boiler regularly switches itself off or needs resetting, there’s usually an underlying issue that needs attention. While an occasional reset may not be a cause for concern, frequent shutdowns are often a sign that your boiler isn’t operating correctly.

Possible causes include:

  • Low pressure.
  • A faulty thermostat.
  • Pump or sensor problems.
  • Overheating.
  • Internal component faults.

A boiler service can help identify the cause, but if a fault is discovered, your heating engineer may recommend a repair. Addressing the problem early can help avoid unexpected breakdowns and more expensive repairs later on.

11. Your Boiler Is More Than 10 Years Old

Older boilers can often continue working reliably if they’re well maintained, but they may become less efficient as they age. They can also develop issues more frequently, making repairs more common over time.

If your boiler is over 10 years old and you’ve started noticing other warning signs, such as higher energy bills or inconsistent heating, it may be worth discussing whether you need a new boiler. A heating engineer can assess its condition and help you decide whether continued repairs or a replacement offers the best long-term value.

12. It’s Been More Than a Year Since Your Last Service

If you can’t remember when your last boiler service was, it’s probably time to book one. Even if your boiler appears to be working normally, problems can develop gradually without obvious warning signs.

Regular servicing helps keep your boiler running safely and efficiently while identifying minor issues before they become more serious. It can also help maintain your boiler warranty and provide greater peace of mind throughout the year. If it’s been more than 12 months since your last service, arranging an annual check is a simple way to help keep your home warm and avoid unnecessary repairs.

Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs

Recognising the signs your boiler needs servicing can help you avoid bigger problems later. While some issues may have a simple solution, others can quickly develop into costly repairs or leave you without heating and hot water when you need them most.

Booking a boiler service at the first sign of a problem allows a heating engineer to identify faults before they become more serious. Regular servicing can also improve efficiency, reduce energy bills and help keep your boiler running safely throughout the year.

If you notice warning signs such as a gas smell, a yellow pilot light or suspect a carbon monoxide issue, stop using your boiler if it’s safe to do so and seek professional advice immediately.
