How often should a boiler be serviced?

If you have a boiler, you might be wondering whether you need to have your boiler serviced. Yes, you do. In fact, having your boiler serviced regularly will give you these benefits:

  • A significantly increased boiler life
  • A more efficiently functioning boiler
  • Fewer costs on fuel
  • Increased safety for you and your family
  • A decrease in minor issues with your boiler
  • Finding a massive issue with your boiler early on can make it much less of a problem, saving you money in the long term.

It’s clear if we consider all these advantages that we should have our boilers serviced regularly. Furthermore, you must have your boiler serviced by professionals since trying to service it yourself can lead to injury to yourself and a damaged boiler.

So how often?

It is best to have your boiler serviced at least once a year. This is a chance for the heating engineer to inspect your boiler and check that it runs efficiently. By having a service done by a qualified heating engineer, you get the peace of mind that your boiler is working correctly and safely.

Landlords have a legal obligation to have their properties’ boilers serviced annually. Although electric boilers don’t require as complete a service as oil and gas boilers, it is still best to have your electric boiler checked once a year.

What is done during a boiler service?

You might be wondering why a yearly service can make such a big difference in your boiler’s performance. When you contact a heating engineer to service your boiler, the following will typically be done:

Inspecting the boiler visually

The heating engineer will start by conducting a visual inspection for any signs of damage or stress.

Checking the functions of the boiler

The heating engineer will then continue to test the safety and control features that your boiler has. Finally, the heating engineer will ensure that all of the boiler’s functions are working as they should.

Flue functions are checked

The next step is to check the route and construction of the flue. The flue of your boiler is the pipe that runs from it to your house’s outside. The heating engineer will check that there aren’t any obstructions in the flue terminals and that it is safely and solidly fitted.

Cleaning of the boiler’s components

Now the heating engineer will focus on the main components of your boiler. It’s not uncommon for them to be removed, inspected, and cleaned during this part of the service.

When should I book a service?

If you answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions below, you should get your boiler serviced, regardless of how long it has been since your last service.

  • Is your boiler’s flame burning irregularly?
  • Have you noticed that your boiler’s flame is yellow?
  • Do nearby appliances appear to have stains on them?
  • Does your boiler over frequently?
  • Does your boiler need to be refilled often?
  • Have you noticed that the water pressure tends to drop?
  • Does the pilot light go out frequently?

Even if it hasn’t been a year since your last service, call a gas safe professional to service your boiler if any of these questions get a positive response from you.

Nu-Age Conclusion

A boiler is designed to give you comfort in your home. Keep your boiler functionally as it was intended by servicing it regularly on an annual 12-month basis. If you have a new boiler installed, this will also ensure your manufacturer guarantee is valid.
